János M. Rainer (1957), historian, professor of contemporary history at Eszterházy Károly University (Eger, Hungary), formerly head of the 1956 Institute – Oral History Archive between 1999-2019. Before 1989 he published in samizdat on the reprisals after 1956. His field of expertise is Hungarian history after WWII, focusing on the 1956 revolution and the Kádár-period. His two-volume biography on Imre Nagy (1996-1999) was published in enshortened version in Polish (2003), Russian (2006), German (2006) and English (2009). Other books of him include Századosok (Captains, 2018), Az 1956-os magyar forradalom. Bevezetés (The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 – An Introduction, 2016), Bevezetés a kádárizmusba (Introduction to Kadarism, 2011), Jelentések hálójában – Antall József és az állambiztonság emberei (In the Net of Reports – József Antall and the State Security People, 2008).
